Celebrating long-time volunteers

posted in: News | 1

At GFS we’re tremendously lucky to have many fantastic, dedicated volunteers in our community. Many of our volunteers have been with us for decades, guiding countless girls through challenges while supporting them to become confident young women.

We’re thankful to each and every volunteer who commits themselves to our girls, but here’s a few of our many GFS superstars celebrating big anniversaries with us, and the kind words shared by their fellow volunteers and members of GFS staff:

Kathleen Pattinson – 65 years, Swinton

Barbara,Group Leader for Layton says, “Having known Kathleen a very long time I have always found her cheerful, never down, and always willing to help on all occasions, excellent at crafts and when asked, Kathleen would always come up with lovely ideas and even  was known to do a craft workshop at World Councils.

We travelled to and from meetings in London on the train together, ‘putting the world to right’ Kathleen is always good company.

Kathleen is kind, considerate and is always thinking of others, she is devoted to GFS.”

Jaci Dooley – 20 years, Pittington

“Jaci is always approachable, reliable, dedicated and committed and has great relationships with the girls and their parents. She is keen to offer a space that is friendly, cheerful and fun while still making sure that the group runs on respect and thoughtfulness.

She has had many proud moments over the years including when the older girls, some of whom have been coming since they were seven, lead the others in games and activities and seeing how well they deal with responsibility. Parents tell the volunteer team how much their daughters love coming along every week.”

Group Coordinator, Erin says, “Jaci had been the backbone of Pittington GFS for 20 years. She has created a legacy within the village and worked with many girls over the years who have very fond memories of their time within GFS”

Jade Clarke – 10 years, Atherstone

“Jade is very positive, friendly and dedicated, and brings real knowledge to the team in working with children. Her contribution to Atherstone has been significant in the ten years she has dedicated to the group.”

Billie Tuplin – 20 years, Wainfleet

Wainfleet’s Group Leader, Judy said, “Billie joined us because she wanted to work with children and has been a fun and resourceful leader putting the girls at ease and making GFS a good place to be.

For all of us at Wainfleet she is an essential part of the team who is reliable, inventive and a great friend. She is happiest when we cook chocolate cake!!

Billie is devoted to the group, helping to support girls at times of great need in Wainfleet like during the floods and through the pandemic.”

Janice Clark – 55 years, Eldon

GFS England President and Eldon Group Leader, Pam, says this of Janice, “Over the years Janice has been very involved with all aspects of GFS. She has worked tirelessly as a Group Leader as well as treasurer for Eldon Branch, Durham Diocese, Northern Area and NE England. For a number of years she has had the role of GFS Almoner. Since Covid she has she has retired from most of these roles but is still acting as Almoner. Janice continues to support Eldon GFS in any way she is able.

Janice has a deep commitment to GFS, she is a rock and central point for a wide network of volunteers, ex-gfs girls and Townsend Fellowship.”

Marion McCumskay – 60 years, Mill Hill

Volunteer Pip Page said, “I joined GFS when I was about seven-years-old – it has been a part of me for 33 years – and so has Marion! How she put up with me as a leader I will never know, but she did. Then turning 18, I became a leader alongside her.

Using things I had learnt from her on the way, I became I good strong GFS leader – from such an amazing role model! It is not just GFS I have shared with Marion – but our church choir, shows and pantomimes, playing for the church netball team.

I look back and realise what a lot of time Marion had for me in all of these areas – and she shares her time with all the other GFS girls who also have had the pleasure of having her as a GFS leader. She leads when she needs to but steps back if she feels that is the right thing to do.

She always involves others and tries to get girls to shine in their talents. Such a team player and a remarkable lady to be know! Thank you for letting me be a part of your journey.”

We hope you’ll join us in wishing each and every one of them a happy GFS anniversary!
