Midlands Area ‘Seaside’ Fun Day 2017

GFS groups from across the Midlands joined together to have a day of seaside themed fun.

The GFS Wainfleet and Skegness led an annual spring fun day for all GFS groups in the region. This year’s event was held in the small village of Navenby near Lincoln.

The inspiration for the event’s ‘a day at the seaside’ theme came from the coastal location of the Skegness and Wainfleet groups. 40 girls, 15 volunteer leaders and the Skegness staff team took part in a day of messy crafts.

Firstly, the girls used stones for ‘mandala’ painting – the Eastern-inspired process of using multi-coloured dots to transform the plain surface of a stone into a beautiful and intricate pattern. They then created seahorse collages which involved gluing beads, shells, gems and sand to make a framed picture. As well as this, the morning was filled with and many other seaside themed crafts such as colouring or designing a postcard, colouring sea themed pictures and a seaside wordsearch. The girls loved the activities and by lunchtime the table was filled with their beautiful work.

Everyone contributed something to the lunchtime picnic which was enjoyed by all. After lunch, the girls learned some circus skills from a professional instructor which included juggling, spinning plates and much more. The other group had fun creating paper windmills, ice biscuits (ice cream, lollipop and bare feet shapes), bendy fish and keyrings. All this hard work was fuelled with ice cream (with sauces and sprinkles of course).

Afterwards, the girls had great fun posing for photos whilst wearing novelty hats, grass skirts and flower garlands in GFS Skegness’ mermaid cut-out stand. Finally, the girls enjoyed a game of rounders before the trip home.

Judy Rowson a leader at GFS Wainfleet said:

“After all the hard work preparing, it was great to have a day when children and adults all joined in and had a good time. From the messages we have had, the girls had really enjoyed the day and one girl from Wainfleet told me felt like she had been to the seaside.

The leaders were also able to take away ideas and materials for another day. We could not have done it without all the volunteers and staff running crafts, making drinks, serving ice cream and washing up alongside us so many thanks to everyone who took part in a lovely day at the seaside.”
