Young women of Great Yarmouth celebrate body confidence with art show

Join us for an empowering celebration of the female form created by the young women of Girls Friendly Society, Great Yarmouth.

The purpose and inspiration behind the Young Women’s Art Show, consisting of a collection of 3D body casts, is to show realistic body shapes in a positive way and to encourage others to celebrate their bodies.

In partnership with mental health charity ‘Mind’, the initiative has provided the young women of Girls Friendly Society and ‘Create’ with the opportunity to display their art in the form of a show. This has given the young women a platform to share their work, thoughts and feelings surrounding their bodies.

Recent studies show that the happiness in girls has been decreasing over the years, with just 61% of girls aged 7- 21 in 2016 happy with how they looked, compared to 73% of girls five years ago. This has a negative impact on young women’s lives, with nearly half saying that their looks “hold them back most of the time” when it comes to having the confidence to take part in social activities, sports and even having their picture taken. The Young Women’s Art Show aims to inspire other women to celebrate their body shape – why they should love it – and hopes to build the confidence and self-esteem of the artists and other women alike.

One young woman artist said: “My art gives me the chance to think about my body in a positive way – to ignore what society says I should look like and to concentrate on why it is amazing!

The exhibition is empowering because it is about the individual woman; how she has ownership over her body – no one else does.”

The Young Women’s Art Show is open Monday 24th-Friday 28th October daily from 10am-2.30pm at Great Yarmouth Minster, Church Plain, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, NR30 1NE. All are welcome and it’s free to attend.
