Young Leaders of the future

Bethan Boland has been part of GFS Penllergaer since she was five years old and recently decided to take the next step in her GFS journey by completing her Young Leader’s Award.

The award is a programme designed to encourage leadership qualities by giving young women the opportunity to design, plan and deliver activities to their GFS group. Once 18, young women who have completed the Award are able to become GFS Leaders themselves.

Having led her first meeting last week, Bethan is now a fully-fledged GFS volunteer.

Bethan said:
“Running my first meeting was a nerve-racking experience yet it really helped boost my confidence with the girls. After taking on the responsibility of running an evening, I feel better prepared to plan activities and events for future meetings! I hope to take on more evenings as a challenge to myself and as the girls seemed to have as much fun completing the tasks as I had planning them.

I would definitely recommend doing the award to other young women! It’s given me confidence, given me a challenge and also made me feel proud of myself now that I’ve completed it. It’s also a lot of fun!”

After the summer, Bethan plans on studying Welsh at Bangor University with the hopes of being a Welsh teacher in the future.
