GFS North Walsham Joins ‘Be Kind’ Movement

The facts and statistics on bullying in the UK are drastic; according to one study, more than 16,000 young people are absent from school due to bullying. When ITV launched their campaign to #BeKind, parents and guardians around the UK pledged to educate young people on the importance of kindness. The campaign has had a great response with nearly 300,000 pledges so far. We caught up with GFS North Walsham to find out how they got involved in the #BeKind movement.

Jayne Billman, Support and Development Worker for GFS Great Yarmouth, said:

“We mapped out a character called Molly and established that Molly appeared to be doing really well and achieving in all areas of her life. Molly seemed to have material wealth, beauty and adoration from all.

Then we revealed the real story behind Molly’s fake smile which demonstrated that we do not always know what is happening in a person’s life and that saying something kind can have a massive impact on them.

Being mean and unkind could be the final blow to someone in crisis. Each member of the group made their own pledge to encourage kindness, stand up to bullies and not be a bystander.”

Feedback from the young women was great – many said the activity inspired them to look past how someone may appear on the outside, and instead consider how they were feeling emotionally. The girls also felt that pledging to ‘Be Kind’ was a way for them to reflect on their own behaviour and how easy it is to ‘look-on’ and avoid standing up for people who might be going through a difficult time. The pledges each young woman made were varied and demonstrate just how many different ways there are to spread kindness.
