GFS London visits Saracens Women’s Rugby

Last night two of our London groups, GFS Leytonstone and GFS Hackney, joined Saracens women’s rugby’s team training night, thanks to an invitation from our corporate partner, Enstar.

We even invited girls from the under 12’s at the local rugby club Eton Manor to join us at StoneX Stadium.

Once there, the girls went straight from the coach onto the pitch. Director of Women’s Rugby, Alex Austerberry, led a coaching session with Sarries player, Alex Ellis.

The girls took part in games teaching key skills and elements – attack, defend and transition, getting the ball over the line, and trying their best to remember not to drop the egg (the ball) no matter what!

Plus, the all important skill… celebrating scoring a try.

The girls worked together brilliantly to make sure that everyone was included, from the more experienced players to the complete novices.

The coaching session finished with a team talk, making sure the girls knew that at the end of the day, it’s all about working as a team and being there for each other.

After the coaching session, girls went to the side of the pitch for a nice picnic tea in the sun. After which, Sarries player, Sydney Gregson, and Women’s Rugby Performance Director, Laura Eddie, came to meet the girls and answer their questions. The girls were filled with questions, on everything from how they got started with Rugby to whether they’re allowed to eat fried chicken!

Some of them were pretty starstruck meeting Sydney, as well. Lots of autographs were signed, including in permanent marker on one of the girl’s hands!

The girls finished off their fantastic trip by holding the European Champions Trophy. On the journey home, they were positively buzzing over everything they experienced. They couldn’t stop chatting about their day out, while they dove into their goodie bags.

We wish our new friends at Saracens all the best for the rest of the season and in their match on Saturday against Bristol Bears.

Thank you to everyone at Saracens for taking time out to inspire our GFS girls – they loved being in the wolf pack! And a huge thank you to Enstar for inviting the girls and making this memorable trip happen.
