Great Yarmouth Project takes on International Women’s Day

The GFS Great Yarmouth Team went all out and organised a brilliant International Women’s Day event in partnership with global volunteer movement ‘Soroptimist’ and ‘GYROS’ (Great Yarmouth Refugee Outreach Services).

International Women’s Day, which is celebrated on 8th March every year, is a time to look at the lives and achievements of women around the world – as well as the issues that continue to affect them. This year carried extra significance because it’s been one hundred years since women (over the age of 30) received the right to vote in Britain.

This particular GFS event was attended by over sixty women across the Great Yarmouth area, including its Mayor, Kerry Robinson Payne.

The guest speaker Adele Bellis could not attend on the day however her powerful message to all attending was represented by a short video interview where she spoke of her horrific acid attack ordeal in 2013.

Interview with Acid Attack survivor Adele Bellis

"I was fortunate enough to make a short film about Adele Bellis for International Women's Day. I thought you might like to see how strong this young woman is – her determination to go on to lead a normal and fulfilling life despite her ordeal with her Sulphuric Acid attack is really empowering. I for one admire her and am eternally inspired by her. Thank you Adele ❤️ " Many thanks to Jayne Billman, our Great Yarmouth Young Women’s Support and Development Worker, who was able to interview Adele and create this video for us to share.

The African Drumming Group Drumisani put on a wonderful performance and brought the day, which was enjoyed by all in attendance, to a brilliant close.

Our GFS Great Yarmouth and GFS Skegness Projects closed in 2018. Read the statement made by our Chair regarding the closures.
