There are many volunteering opportunities within Girls Friendly Society. Some roles work directly with girls and young women, and some are ‘behind the scenes’ roles working in one of our offices or from home.

This page lists all the urgent volunteer vacancies we need to fill to help our groups succeed. Typically, these vacancies arise because the number of girls and young women in a group has increased and outgrown the current volunteers’ capacity, a new group has just launched or previous volunteers have retired.

If a role you’re interested in isn’t here, don’t worry, you can still let us know your volunteering interests by filling in our volunteer enquiry form and we’ll get back to you.

North East

St Marks Elm Tree, Stockton (GFS Stockton)

Our GFS Stockton afterschool club is run exclusively for girls aged 9-11 attending St Marks Elm Tree Primary School in Stockton. Our current leader Sam is doing a wonderful job. However, the group numbers have grown at such a rate that more volunteers are needed to help out. We’re looking for volunteers to help Sam with running and overseeing the club’s activities, as well as helping out with the odd bit of admin. It is a rewarding role with the opportunity to see girls and young women grow in confidence and develop their self-esteem.

GFS volunteers work together to plan and run activities, events and trips out for a group of girls and young women. Activities take place in a safe, non-judgemental, single-gender space where play and socialising are encouraged through positive relationships with female role models. Sessions offer opportunities for girls and young women to play, be creative, get active, develop skills and a sense of belonging, and to feel good about themselves.

Time of meet: Wednesday afternoons, fortnightly 3.15-4.45pm
Venue address: St Marks Elm Tree, Bishopton Road, St Mark’s Cl, Stockton-on-Tees, TS19 7HA
Commitment: Two hours contact time once a fortnight during term time is ideal, but not essential. Less than one hour of admin per week.

Lambton Street Youth Centre, Sunderland (GFS Lambton Street)

GFS Lambton Street is a brand-new branch just opened in April 2017 for girls aged 13 and over. Currently led by Leader Hannah, we’re looking for volunteers to help out with further establishing the branch and to work with the girls already in attendance. Helping out with admin and branch promotion in the local community would also be helpful. Any women who are interested in volunteering should get in touch.
