The snake

Duration:

10 minutes

Estimated Cost:

£0

Focus

To build trust and cooperation within the group. This activity involves trust and touch so it helps if the girls know each other well. As group leader you should decide if it is suitable for the girls in your group.

Preparation

None.

Instructions

1.

Ask the whole group to stand in a line to make a long ‘snake’ shape.

2.

Then ask everyone to close their eyes and gently place their hands on the shoulders of the person in front of them.

3.

As soon as they feel comfortable this should extend to feeling the head and hair of that person. (If this becomes uncomfortable at any time agree a ‘time out’ procedure.) Encourage the girls to take particular note of the shape of heads and texture of hair.

4.

Now ask the snake to start to ‘wriggle’, this should be slowly to begin with, getting faster until, with their eyes still closed, the ‘snake’ breaks apart.

5.

Keeping their eyes tightly shut the final part of the task is to reform the ‘snake’ in the correct order using touch only. To do this they will need to recognise the head and hair of the person who was in front of them.

6.

When the group are sure they have completed the ‘snake’ correctly invite them to open their eyes. How well did they do? How easy was it?
