Focus

The purpose of this activity is to explore what vocabulary the girls associate with both boys and girls.

Preparation

None.

Instructions

1.

In small groups, ask the girls write down words that they associate with girls and boys. Do this on two separate pieces of paper – one describing girls and one describing boys.

2.

Discuss as a group how boys and girls have been described. What similarities are there between the two genders? What differences are there? To what extent are the words based on gender stereotypes/myths about females and males?

3.

As an extension of this activity to be done at home, the girls could ask male siblings and friends to write down their words. These could be reported back and compared with the girls’ vocabulary.
